Sure it's a bit late for Christmas, but bookmark this for next year: Tales from the Microbial Laboratory's annual list of Gifts for that Special Microbiologist. The suggestions range from Winogradsky Column Kits to microbial jewelry to Agar Art. Something for everyone.

Capacitor Folk Art by Obvious Front

OBVIoUS FRoNT takes our discarded computers, radios, televisions and other gadgets and refashions the bits and pieces into jewelry and art. You can find all kinds of fun creations at the Obvious Front shop at Etsy, including earrings, charms and colorful critters.

Image: "Dot Lipped Quartet" charms
The colored dots that sometime appear on a robot's lips are all natural. I like matching them up in pairs for a special look, as most of a robot's personality is in their lips.

This group consists of four Dot-Lipped charms, each one about 1.5" (4cm) tall. They're all built with cleaned electronic components salvaged from discarded TVs and VCRs using lead-free solder.

Each piece is individually bagged with a suction cup for hanging by your computer (helps prevent crashing). A 7mm jump-ring is included for use as a necklace from your chain (turns heads in the IT department). You'll also get four gift cards, making these robots great little surprises for you favorite computer geeks.

Moon Dust DNA Watch

The Moon Dust-DNA watch by Swiss watchmaker Romain Jerome sounds like the ultimate geek accessory:
  • A lunar dial based on a mineral deposit including Moon dust;
  •  A 46 mm steel and titanium case incorporating steel from the Apollo XI space shuttle;
  • Rusted steel paws including fragments of the Soyuz spacecraft; and
  • A strap composed of fibres from a spacesuit worn during the ISS mission.
As far as I can tell, no actual DNA is included - instead they are using the term to mean "essence of" or, maybe more accurately, "related bits of". Still, very cool for anyone who wants to wear a little bit of space exploration.

Orbital Necklace

At the Ulixis Etsy store you can purchase this stylish necklace depicting the obits of our solar system's inner planets.
At the center is the sun: a 10 mm clear glass flat disc with yellow ghost (a stripe within the glass). The next planet is Mercury: a 4mm mookaite round. Next is Venus: a 6mm Swarovski rondelle in light Colorado topaz (with a beautiful AB finish). Next is the Earth: a 6mm blue-green-clear glass round with white "clouds". Finally, Mars: a 5mm red glass round.

All the planets can move freely on their orbits (except for Mercury, which needs some force to move).

VivaceCrafts sells cute cartoony foam Ehrlenmeyer Flask Earrings.
For added sturdiness and more protection from the elements, these earrings are coated in a layer of resin. You never know what can splash up at you, especially if you aren't wearing protection in the lab! **Please do remove them before bathing / jumping into an acid bath**
Perfect for the fashionable chemist!

Quasar for a Cause

Etsy seller Finestra Designs donates 20% of sales to the charity of the buyer's choice (see the announcement for details). That means a purchase of one of Finestra's jewelry items created from fantastic NASA astronomy prints will both look fabulous and do some good for others. I especially like the Quasar Pendant (at left) and the Moon Phases Bracelet.

Necromance

Come October my desires turn to bones and creepy crawly things. The perfect source of such ghoulish gear is Necromance.  If you can't make it to their Hollywood store, you can browse their select items online. Some of my favorites: the real mouse hand necklace (shown left), turtle vertebrae ring, the small bat in a glass frame, x-rays of human bones, and the mounted spider web. There are also items decorated with old botanical prints, mounted insects and other biological bits.

And if you are shopping for Halloween gear, they also sell lots of items with skulls and spiders and funereal accessories. Awesome.

Mad scientist earring set

Etsy seller polarity sells a cute set of earrings that proclaim your status as a mad scientist:
Each earring has 2 magnetic interchangeable lids - both with mad scientist designs (is there any other kind of scientist?).

Each earring is approx 1 1/4" and the hang is approx. 1 3/4". There is a little bit of weight to them (not too much) and if you are used to larger earrings you will love them!

You can even use your earring as a little locket and place a little picture inside! It is packaged in a cute little tin, perfect for gift giving or storage.
A steal for only $12.

Algal Bloom and Coral Jewelry

Nervous System creates jewelry based on the patterns in nature. Their Algal Bloom line is based on the patters found in growing mats of algae. Their dendrite line is based on the shape of coral. And you can also help design your own patterns:
An interactive algorithm controls the aggregation allowing consumers to participate in the design process.
And if you'd rather select a pre-made piece, they have a nice selection of necklaces, earrings and bracelets to choose from.

Elegant Orchid Jewelry

Elizabeth Galton makes beautiful silver jewelry based on the elegant shape of orchids. It's a bit expensive - perfect for a night on the town, rather than for working in the field. Check out the beautiful offerings in her Orchid Ready-to-Wear Collection.

Patron Saint of Biologists: Saint Albert the Great

Saint Albert Magnus was a Dominican priest who introduced ancient Greek and Arabic science to medieval Europe, and who personally had a great interest in botany and biology. Today he is considered the patron saint of the natural sciences and scientists. What better way to keep him close to your heart than to wear a sterling silver medal depicting St. Albert with his scientific tools!

Stylish Floppy Disks

There's nothing that says "retro" in the tech world like old-fashioned floppy disks. Now Pure Design has created a bracelet that will let you proudly present your 20th-century geek chic.
This bracelet boasts funky and floral-like forms, and excellent designer and eco-credentials. Made from recycled floppy diskettes, the diskette flowers are mounted on a delicate cotton band.
At £55, definitely more expensive than the original floppies - or even a present-day 1Gb thumb drive. If you, like me, have a box of useless floppies stashed amongst your belongings, maybe you could create your own as a DIY project.

Help Design Jewelry Inspired By the Patterns in Nature

Nervous System creates unique jewelry based on biological patterns from "nontraditional materials like silicone rubber and stainless steel with rapid prototyping methods." Their Radiolaria series is inspired by radiolarians - amoeboid protozoa with intricate mineral skeletons - but could as easily be the outlines of plant cells.    And what is especially cool is that you can use their software to create a unique pattern all your own. The lacy jewelry is cut from silicone rubber, then etched from stainless steel.
